The Residence Hall Complex

A traditional residential hall experience in the urban heart of Berkeley, close to local cafes, restaurants, and shops. Conveniently located one block from the south side of campus.

Six buildings — Cheney, Deutsch, Freeborn, and Putnam Halls, and the Christian and Slottman Minisuite Halls — built around a large central courtyard.

Nearest dining commons: Crossroads, only a half-block away.

A central building houses the unit office, mail services, and rooms for meetings, events, and parties, as well as the Academic Services Center.
Who’s Eligible to Apply?
Undergraduates: First-year students, continuing students, and transfer students.
High Rise Residence Halls: Cheney, Deutsch, Freeborn, and Putnam Halls

Eight floors of double- and triple-occupancy rooms. (A very limited number of single rooms are available for students with ADA accommodations.)

Most floors are all gender; single-gender floors also available.

Bathrooms: one large all-gender bathroom per floor; single-gender floors have single-gender community bathrooms.

Main lounge on entry level; additional lounges on upper floors.

Some rooms have a bay view.

Approximately 230 beds in each hall.

Freeborn Hall is designated as a Substance-Free Environment (see below).
Mini-suite Residence Halls: Christian and Slottman Halls

Mini-suites have two spacious bedrooms and one semi-private shared bathroom in these configurations:

two double-occupancy bedrooms

one double-occupancy bedroom and one triple-occupancy bedroom

The African American Theme Program is located in Christian Hall.

The Native American Theme Program is located in Slottman Hall.
Freeborn Hall: Substance-Free Environment
Freeborn Hall, one building in the Unit 1 complex, is designated as a Substance-Free Environment. Residents actively agree to keep the community free of smoke, alcohol, and drugs. They plan and host substance-free programs, events, and activities.
