Who is eligible for UC Berkeley graduate student housing?
Graduate student housing is available to full-time, degree-seeking UC Berkeley students and scholars who meet one of the following sets of requirements.
Graduate students who:
- Have a housing application in the UC Berkeley Housing Portal
- In submitted status,
- For the term they need housing, and
- Remain enrolled, registered, and in good standing with the university.
Postdoctoral scholars or visiting scholars who:
- Provide an appointment letter,
- Have self-registered through the Housing Portal,
- Have a housing application in the UC Berkeley Housing Portal
- In submitted status,
- For the term they need housing, and
- Remain affiliated with the university.
Occupancy limit: Scholars are allowed to stay in graduate student apartments until July 31 following their first year of occupancy, or until their appointment expires, whichever occurs first; limited to a maximum stay of two (2) years.

Postdoctoral and visiting scholars are not eligible to reside in studios or one-bedroom apartment types.
Who receives priority for graduate student housing?
Graduate student campus housing has the following housing priority by location.
- Ida L. Jackson House Apartments: The following fellowship recipients receive priority: ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists), Berkeley, Berkeley Mellon, Chancellor’s, Cota Robles, National Science Foundation, Regent’s.
- Intersection Apartments: Optometry students receive first priority and Berkeley/Chancellor’s fellowship recipients second priority.
- Manville Apartments: First year Juris Doctorate Candidates receive priority.
- xučyun ruwway Apartments: Rausser College of Natural Resources students receive priority.
- Family student housing: Visit Family Housing Eligibility for Tenancy for details.
Maintaining eligibility
To remain eligible for UC Berkeley housing, students must:
- Maintain full-time enrollment each term,
- Stay in good academic and conduct standing,
- Complete all required housing forms and payments by stated deadlines, and
- Comply with all UC Berkeley Housing policies and contract terms.
Additional eligibility considerations
Concurrently enrolled and UC Extension students at UC Berkeley.
- Please note that concurrently enrolled and UC Extension students are not eligible for campus housing.
- However, extension students are encouraged to use UC Berkeley Off-Campus Rental Services as a resource in their housing search.
Students returning from a leave of absence.
- Students who are returning to UC Berkeley after a leave of absence are eligible to apply for housing once their readmission or re-enrollment is confirmed.
