Community standards
Prior to moving into your University Village apartment, we recommend reviewing the University Village Manual and Graduate and Family Living Residential Code of Conduct.
Getting your apartment set up
University Village apartments come unfurnished, so you will need to make your own arrangements to furnish your apartment.
Furniture rental
UC Berkeley has partnered with CORT Furniture Rental to offer furniture rental packages for University Village residents. If you are interested in learning more about this option, please visit CORT Furniture Leasing.
Bringing or purchasing furniture
If you are bringing your own furniture or purchasing furniture to be delivered, please note that the University Village office cannot hold deliveries or allow movers entry into your apartment before your arrival. You should make arrangements for any deliveries or moving services to arrive after you have checked in.
For moving containers or trucks: Please know that the Village has limited parking and narrow streets that must remain clear for AC Transit buses and other through traffic. During loading and unloading, please ensure you do not block traffic. Use your reserved space (approx. 7.5’ x 16’), check with neighbors about temporarily using their spaces, or park in guest spaces. Do not drive cars, trucks, or trailers on lawns or sidewalks, as this can damage underground water lines and result in repair charges billed to you.
Note to tenants moving into buildings 100–117: Due to the structure of townhouses in these buildings, the stairwell cannot accommodate queen-size box springs. Tenants are advised to use a split or adjustable bed frame for queen-size beds.
On your move-in day
You may pick up your keys and move in on your contract start date. You can move in anytime after that date, but you will still be responsible for rent based on the start day of your rental agreement. Early key pick-up or move-in before the contract start date may only occur if approved by the Family Student Housing department and will require updating your rental agreement and billing start date.
On your scheduled move-in day, please go to the University Village office, located at 1125 Jackson Street, Albany, California 94706, during business hours. The office is open Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Check for holiday hours and closures on the University Village office contact page.
You will need to provide a photo ID to University Village office staff at check-in. Staff will provide you with your keys, parking assignment, contact information, and review other important information at this time. Once you’ve checked in at the office, be sure to complete the following important tasks to ensure a smooth move-in and get settled in your apartment.
Complete your contact information and apartment access sheet
At check-in, University Village staff will have you complete a Contact Information Sheet, which includes your email and emergency contacts. The access list may be left blank initially and updated as needed with individuals such as family members or childcare providers who may require access in the event of a lockout. If you wish to revoke someone’s access, please inform the Village office. As this list authorizes individuals to enter your apartment with a loaner key, it is important to keep it accurate and up to date.
Turn in your apartment condition check
To protect yourself and ensure a smooth move-out process, it’s important to complete the University Village Apartment Condition Form. This form records the condition of your apartment at the time of move-in, including any existing damage or issues.
Completing the form carefully and returning it to the village office within five days of move-in helps avoid disputes later and ensures that you are not held responsible for pre-existing conditions. Take your time to note any scratches, stains, or maintenance concerns, and submit the form promptly so your records are accurate and complete.

Getting settled in
Once you are moved in, it’s time to get acquainted with the important details that will help you make the most of your apartment at University Village. From managing your keys and parking, to handling mail and connecting to internet or telephone services, this section provides everything you need to navigate day-to-day life smoothly. Reviewing these guidelines will help you avoid common issues, stay organized, and ensure your living experience is safe, convenient, and comfortable. Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with each area so you’re fully prepared as you settle into your new home.
Keys and lost keys
You are provided with two keys; or two sets of keys if you have a keyed backdoor.
- Duplication of University of California keys is prohibited.
- Any additional keys must be ordered through the University Village office by filling out a maintenance request. The cost is a one-time fee for each key and will be charged to your CARS account or added to your rent.
- For security reasons, if you lose a key outside your apartment, notify the Village office immediately. We will change the locks and issue new keys, and a fee will apply to your CARS account or rent. This fee also applies if any keys issued or purchased by you are not returned when you move out.
Parking spaces and permits
Apartments have one reserved parking space. Your parking space assignment will be provided at the time of move-in. Each apartment is assigned one reserved parking space.
All vehicles need a valid parking permit. All vehicles parked at University Village, including your assigned space, must have a valid parking permit. If you have additional residents or guest vehicles, each vehicle will require a separate permit or payment of the Visitor Parking Fee. All resident, employee, and guest vehicles must have a valid permit or pay the appropriate fee. See University Village Parking Permits for further information and pricing.
Share your vehicle and contact information with the Village office. Please provide your contact information and vehicle license plate number. This is important in case your vehicle needs to be moved during emergencies. Make sure your contact information is always up to date.
Do not drive on lawns or sidewalks. While moving, do not drive cars, trucks, or trailers on the lawn or sidewalks. Underground water lines could be broken, and you will be charged for any damages.
Managing your mail is an essential part of settling into your apartment. This section explains how to ensure your mail is delivered correctly, how to access your mailbox, and how to update your mailing address.
Below, you’ll find important details about your building and apartment number, mailing address, mailbox locations, and how to submit a change of address so you can stay organized and receive your mail without interruption.
Building and apartment number
The University Village office needs your building and apartment number to handle daily operations, such as issuing keys, responding to maintenance requests, and managing other apartment-related needs. Your move-in material includes this information, along with your laundry room number and mailbox location, so you’ll have everything you need at hand.
Mailing address
The United States Post Service (USPS) uses the street address and apartment number for mail, e.g., 735 Ohlone Ave., apt 408. Please do not add the building number to the mailing address.
Mailbox locations
Mailboxes are located centrally in each building. Your apartment front door key also opens your mailbox, laundry room, and University Village study rooms.
- East Village: Mailboxes are on the outside wall of your laundry room. The small box near your front door is for newspapers and fliers.
- West Village: Mailboxes are located under the staircase of the building.
Always make sure your mail is sent to your own address. The Village office cannot accept mail or packages on behalf of residents. If you receive someone else’s mail, write “Return to Sender,” cross out the bar codes, and drop it in a USPS mailbox; there is one in front of the University Village office.
Change of address with U.S. Postal Service
Fill out an official USPS Change-of-Address card at least two weeks before you move out so that the new tenants will not receive your mail. You will no longer have access to your mailbox once you move out. You may change your address online by going to USPS.com.
Getting connected: Internet, telephone, and Internet Protocol TV
Each apartment includes wireless access points (APs) with built-in wired data ports. Do not move the AP, open the port plate, add extensions, or attach cords to the wall with nails or staples. Any unauthorized modifications left behind at move-out will result in a charge for removal.
Internet
For assistance with activating your connection, visit Berkeley Student Technology Services. You may call Student Technology Services at 510-642-HELP (4357).
Important note: CalNet credentials are required to connect to the internet in University Village. If you do not have CalNet credentials, please read How to Claim your CalNet ID.
Telephone service
AT&T is the only service provider authorized to install telephone service at University Village. To establish a new line or transfer an existing one, you must contact AT&T directly at 800‑310‑2355 or visit their website.
The university is responsible for installing one usable telephone jack in your apartment and for maintaining the internal wiring in good working order, as required under Civil Code Section 1941.4. Residents are responsible for their telephone equipment and any wiring connecting the telephone to the jack.
If you experience an issue with your telephone service:
- Notify AT&T at 800‑303‑0103 to have them diagnose the problem.
- Notify the University Village office so the university can determine whether the repair is their responsibility.
If the issue is the university’s responsibility, you may be reimbursed for repair charges to your CARS account upon submission of the actual bill. Note: If a problem is not reported to the Village office and you arrange a repair on your own, the university will not reimburse you.
Residents are encouraged to schedule installations or service requests promptly to ensure uninterrupted service. Following these procedures ensures that telephone service is safe, properly maintained, and compliant with university and legal standards.
