Relocation of residents in family student housing is only allowed when the criteria of the relocation policies are met. For family student housing, unlike most UC Berkeley Housing, we do not recommend that students accept their housing offer and try to relocate later. Relocation is only allowed in specific circumstances. If you are not yet a resident but have received an offer, please refer to How to Read Your Offer: Family Housing.
Relocation policies for current residents
- New eligible applicants receive priority over family student housing residents who wish to relocate.
- Relocation requests from residents who are current in rent may be considered for one of the following reasons:
- Senior Community Director or staff mediated agreement.
- Disability or medical condition accommodation request with documentation, for details visit Medical and Accessibility Accommodations.
- Change in family size — transfer to a unit with more or fewer bedrooms, depending upon whether family size has increased or decreased.
- Emergency maintenance issue.
- Documented change in finances from when the rental agreement was signed.
- Relocations will NOT be approved if the resident has less than 6 months remaining in their program.
- Residents approved for relocation may receive up to two relocation offers.
- Residents will have 3 days to move, but if more time is needed, the resident will be financially responsible for both apartments after the initial 3-day period until the keys to the original apartment are returned to the Village office.
Relocation process for current residents
- Review the relocation policies listed above and confirm you meet the criteria to relocate.
- Complete the Family Student Housing Account Change Request Form and submit the form and any required supporting documents to Family Student Housing at apts@berkeley.edu.
- If your relocation request is approved, you will be added to the relocation waitlist until an available apartment is identified. If you decline the first relocation offer, you will be returned to the wait list until another available apartment is identified for a second and final relocation offer.
- To accept a relocation offer, you will need to complete a Relocation Intent to Vacate form and sign a new rental agreement.
